Survillance and observations ( chapter 4 of the book of volcanoes

Name: The eruption of laki volcano, iceland, 1783

Fact: It is often said of iceland that in the eighteenth century the country was still living in the middle ages. If this was true where it's economic development is concerned, the same cannot be said of its culture. Since the discovery and colonization of the country in 874, the Vikings---who become the icelanders---have carried on written traditions that tell their entire history, from detailed chronicles to mythical stories.

Fact 2: In 1783, Laki volcano began to erupt and the entire neighboring region was affected. At the monastery of Prestbakki, the Reverend jon Steingrimsson quickly grasped the scope and inerest of the phenomenon and decided to keep a chronicle. With no prior scientific education, he proved to be an attenive, precise observer. He not only recorded observations, but at the some time related the consequences of the eruption, keeping careful inventory of deaths, trying each time to identify the real cause of death of his parishioners.

The brith of Volcanology

Fact: Our knowledge of volcanoes has grown over a long and circuitous path through history, moving from mythological representation to todays's theoretical, computer-generated models. Knowledge has been refined as more complex question have been addressed, and the means of investiagtion has broadened as well: at one time scholars studied only one type of rock, one volcano or volcanic region, one particular dynamic, or one specific eruption.

Fact 2:  Today, there is a growing trend toward a global, many sided approach to the study of volcanoes. Biologists, archaeologists, and climatologists engage in fruitful dialogue with volcanologists. Knowledge becomes richer and shows us that volcanic eruptions, whether mild or cataclysmic, can have major repercussions on hunman life. That, in fact, is the primary advnace that has come about in the evoulution of knowledge: earth is a living planet, and its life closely determines our own.

Fact 3: People have always tried to answer questions raised by the terrifying uncontrollable natural force of volcanoes. Some have found these answer in divine or demonic manifestations. Others, driven by passionate  curiosity, have visited the craters in an attempt to understand how the earth functions. Empedocles was famous for this all consuming inerest led him to build his home near the volcano.

ceremonies ( chapter 2 of the volcanoe book )

Name: Indonesia and its volcanoes

Fact: As part of the Pacific fire belt, Indonesia has the world's greatest concentration of active volcanoes. The archipelago has a total of seventy-six that are potentially active. Statistics on volcanoes eruptions have been kept only since 1600.

Fact 2: But it is rapidly bacoming clear that indonesia is the country with the most frequent eruptions and the one that has had the most victims over the past four hundred years. We need only recall the eruption of Krakatoa in I883, which left nearly36,000 dead, or that of Tambora in I8I5, which killed 92,000. The eruption are often voilent, always explosive, and usually fatal for many.

Fact 3: Despite this omnipresent danger, which has struck often in the past and will strike again in the future, people in indonesia continue to live close to active volcanoes. The reasons for living in close proximity to volcanoes are many and diverse. Overpopulation and lack of space are increasingly pushing people to live in dangerous areas previously deserted. But, above all, these areas have the most fertile soils.

A book i red about volcanoes

Its about : Of gods and volcanoes

Facts: It is ineresting how much reaitly lies behind the great myths and legends. In fact, actual experiences unite people in believing in the same "history." There is no boubt that such a basis in reaitly in indisoensable for these beliefs to endure for centuries.

Fact 2: Volcanic eruption, especially sizeable ones, have had a deep impact on people's imagination. Every aspect is impressive --- the trembling of the earth, the molten stone that is ejected, the explosion and projection prising that natural wonder of this kind should play a role in several or the great myths.
