ceremonies ( chapter 2 of the volcanoe book )

Name: Indonesia and its volcanoes

Fact: As part of the Pacific fire belt, Indonesia has the world's greatest concentration of active volcanoes. The archipelago has a total of seventy-six that are potentially active. Statistics on volcanoes eruptions have been kept only since 1600.

Fact 2: But it is rapidly bacoming clear that indonesia is the country with the most frequent eruptions and the one that has had the most victims over the past four hundred years. We need only recall the eruption of Krakatoa in I883, which left nearly36,000 dead, or that of Tambora in I8I5, which killed 92,000. The eruption are often voilent, always explosive, and usually fatal for many.

Fact 3: Despite this omnipresent danger, which has struck often in the past and will strike again in the future, people in indonesia continue to live close to active volcanoes. The reasons for living in close proximity to volcanoes are many and diverse. Overpopulation and lack of space are increasingly pushing people to live in dangerous areas previously deserted. But, above all, these areas have the most fertile soils.
